DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Russell Fielding – History of Breadfruit\nJoin us for our monthly club meeting featuring guest speaker Russell Fielding\, who will explore the history of breadfruit. Learn about its origins\, cultural significance\, and how this remarkable plant has traveled the world to become an important food source. Open discussion and Q&A to follow. \n\nRussell Fielding is an environmental geographer whose research focuses on sustainable food systems in the coastal and island settings of our changing world. A former Fulbright scholar at the University of Prince Edward Island’s Institute of Island Studies\, Fielding holds graduate degrees in geography from Louisiana State University and the University of Montana\, as well as an undergraduate degree from the University of Florida. \nFielding is the author of two books: The Wake of the Whale (Harvard University Press\, 2018) and Breadfruit (Columbia University Press\, 2025)\, as well as numerous academic and popular articles. He is currently an Associate Professor at Coastal Carolina University with a joint appointment in the Department of Anthropology & Geography and the HTC Honors College while holding a research position with the Ocean Nexus Program at the University of Rhode Island. \nMore information may be found at russellfielding.com.

SUMMARY:The Manatee Rare Fruit Council’s 37th Annual Fruit Tree and Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:The best selection of fruit trees and edible plants\, plus native plants and ornamentals! Rare plants you won’t find elsewhere. Twenty selected expert vendors from all over Florida\, free admission\, free parking\, and public restrooms close to the sale area. All in one place\, all on one day– the best day of the year to buy edible and ornamental plants. \nPlease note that vendors will collect payment directly for their own sales. Many will be accepting credit cards\, but it’s best to bring cash just in case\, so that you don’t miss out on your favorite must-have trees. There will be no ATM available at the site. \nWe recommend that you bring a cart or wheelbarrow\, if possible\, to haul your purchases. \nThe non-profit Manatee Rare Fruit Council will have a table set up with members who can help answer your fruit growing questions.
